Looking forward

I was reading something interesting on Gateworld this morning. I keep an eye on the site through the RSS feed...gives me an easy way to see what's happening in the Stargate world. (Yes, I need a real life.)

According to the report on Gateworld princple photography is wrapping this week on season nine and there's been no news about a season ten. I'm not surprised or worried. It's happened in previous years as well, but for the first time I discovered that I wasn't excited about it.

I've been watching SG since the beginning and there have been ups and downs in the episodes, but it's been fine. Actually, more than fine. But ever since season nine kicked off this summer, I've noticed that SG has changed. Now, I will admit freely that I'm a Jack O'Neill fan--always have been, always will be--and for me, without RDA and O'Neill Stargate is not the same. There is something missing and without Jack there always will be. (Hence the whole VS9 project I'm involved with this year.) I was willing, however, to give the new cast a go.

Yeah, I'm not so crazy about it now.

Atlantis has been a lot of fun and I find myself more interested in those characters and their adventures than I am with General Landry, Vala, and Mitchell in SG-1. Yes, Daniel, Sam, and Teal'c are there, but it's not the same. The chemistry is not right, the spark, to me, is gone.

That, I think more than anything, makes me sad.

Now, I know the reassons why things changed and I have to give RDA credit for leaving to take care of his daughter, which is far more important than a television show. But that still means that I'm going to miss the character and hope that one day, he'll come back in a meaningful version of the role he portrayed very well for the past eight years.

Will I continue to watch in the hopes that the writing and the plot and the characters improve and grow on me? Yes. As long as it doesn't grow on me like a deadly fungus I think we'll be okay...I think.

So, season ten. Do I think that they'll be one? Probably. I don't see SciFi walking away from the "longest running science fiction show in the US" title that easily. Right now SG-1 is tied with X-Files for longest running scifi shows in the US. So, do I think it'll get picked up? Probably. Ratings have been strong-ish, not as good as season eight, but respectable.

Do I want SG to continue? Oh yeah, but I also want good plots, good writing, strong acting, and good character development (and more Jack O'Neill). Is that too much to ask?

I don't think it is too much to ask for a good plot line and good writing. The show has managed to produce 8 seasons before this that were more or less excellent (all episodes without Daniel, including season 6 could be debated as to whether they were, in fact, worth watching, but I digress...)

I hope this is a case where they just have one bad season, and they are able to bounce back stronger than before. I really hope the show hasn't "jumped the shark" so to speak, since I think there is still a lot of potential there. We shall see I guess.

In the mean time, see, I am writing something! Watch me write: writewritewritewrite.....

The temptation to delete that last post was great. Some season six episodes were superb. Let's just agree to disagree, shall we?
And as for jumping the shark...they are VERY close if they haven't already.

I enjoyed season 6 alot. Some of my all time favourite eps come from season six.

and i haven't seen much of season 9 yet as i had been busy with my summer enslavement so i can't say much one way or the other. and i have tried not to read too many reviews as i want to have my own prespective when i watch it.

and while yes i will miss jack, he is my favourite character, i think that if they keep good plotlines and build good character it would be worth watching.

and now...i shall go ponder why i start so many sentences with 'and' and how Mrs. Salisbury from second grade and Mrs. Godbold from third must be having heart attacks if they saw it.

They got rid of Jack because they knew Daniel was so much better. With that usurping General out of the picture, my boy can finally take his rightful place as the star of the show.

:D

tee hee hee. You could have avoided all this had you just given in and produced one little fic with Daniel-whumping. I even conceded that you could whump Jack at the same time. That is how flexible I am. But nooooo...

If I remember the conversation correctly, I did not object to writing a Daniel and Jack whump fic. I only mentioned that it can't be right now. I'm in the middle of three other fics. At this point one more would make my head explode and then there would be no hope of getting a fic out of me then.

One of those pesky minor details.

Nuh uh. You said NO! and left me hanging. But now that I know there could be one in the future, I am content and happy to wait. All good things are worth waiting for as long as they take. See? I am easy to please. (grin)
